No Price Relief Seen for Consumers in Forecasts
Government and private forecasters warn of continued price increases for 1974 with little relief from rising raw material costs and fuel. Dunlop predicts steep early-year rises while Butz expects food prices to climb 5 to 6 percent, and Mellon Bank projects a 5 percent rise. Wage settlements and strikes loom as inflation accelerates. Personal income surged 10.3 percent in 1973, fueling durable goods spending and higher living costs.
