In Heidelberg the U S Army Europe spokesman said deserters in Europe are a "rotten few" with most having court martial records. About 365 men were on the European deserter list as of Jan 1. 46 defected to Communist nations in the past two decades, and roughly a dozen protesters remain.
The Dow Jones at 2 p.m. est shows 30 industrials down 3.35 to 895.63, 20 rails off 0.70 to 286.36, and 15 utilities at 134.84. Trading volume hits 9,340,000 shares amid scattered advances and declines among big names including General Electric, IBM, Ford, Boeing, American Tobacco, and Texaco.
South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu denounced U S leadership in seeking peace in Vietnam. He warned against UN involvement and pressed for stronger pressure on North Vietnam and Viet Cong until hostilities end. The White House declined comment on his remarks.
The 90th Congress begins amid Vietnam war funding, taxes, and city problems. Senate and House leaders expect a long session with battles over spending and urban unrest, while Johnson aims to send proposals early. Mansfield urges fast action and a return to regular work five days a week.
Mascel Thomas Hunter, a clerk at 1649 North 74th Street U Totem Food Store, says a masked bandit at 9 20 p.m. Sunday held him up and demanded $36 in cash. The man brandished a revolver and ordered Hunter to lie on the floor and count to 60 before fleeing.
Eugene E. Smith 37 of Williams Air Force Base Chandler sustained minor injuries in a one car wreck on Scottsdale Road near Lincoln Drive. He left the roadway struck a cement culvert and fence then hit a power pole. He was cited for fail to control vehicle and driving while intoxicated. A witness said no other car was present.
The Scottsdale Rotary Club honored Motorola, Inc. for service to Arizona during a luncheon at Camelback Inn. Dr. Daniel Noble Vice man of the board and Motorola technical officers addressed the gathering.
Walter W. Heller former top economic adviser to Kennedy and Johnson says the administration should settle for a 7 or 8 percent surtax to speed congressional approval though he still favors a 10 percent levy. He warns that without tax action interest rates will rise pressuring domestic and foreign economies and cites built in budget increases and possible cuts to nondefense programs.
Two people were injured in separate weekend crashes in Scottsdale. A 10 year old boy riding a bicycle on N 87th Street near Hubbell Street was struck by a car driven by Kenneth Bovay 16 of 8738 E Forrest Dr. Bovay was unhurt and the Goett youth was taken to Doctors Hospital in Phoenix in good condition. In a second crash Eleanor Higgins 45 of 575 Pueto Way was slightly hurt as a car driven by her son Christopher 20 collided with a car driven by Cruz Medina 57 of 2601 N 71st Street late at night near Thomas Road.
The Mayo Clinic doctor warns that amphetamines benzedrine and dexedrine act as strong brain stimulants aiding mood and narcolepsy but are misused by thousands of youths in San Francisco and beyond. He notes dangerous injection practices, extreme doses, weight loss, memory impairment, and uncertainty about permanent brain damage. He argues prohibition is ineffective and cites rising heroin use and limited impact of policing.

Two Paradise Valley High School seniors Bob McCaleb and Steve Spease were named Outstanding Teenagers of America by the Outstanding Americans Foundation. They were nominated by their school to compete for state and national awards. Bob McCaleb serves as Student Council president and chair of the Student Council committees. He has been named Student of the Month and received the Optimist International Outstanding Student Award for letters. He also won the Phoenician Ball Scholarship and a scholarship to the University of Arizona.
