Cuba defends U.N. clash over Rap Brown and Smith

Cuba charged New York police with violent aggression in a scuffle inside the Cuban Mission at the United Nations. The Cuban delegation protested to U Thant, saying Brown and Smith were forced back to the mission after being denied exit.

Rights not violated in Malumphy death trial

Timothy Malumphy did not have constitutional rights violated by being denied self representation at his trial. Maricopa County judge William Holohan said the matter will be reviewed by the Arizona Supreme Court. Malumphy, 25, was sentenced to death for shooting two fellow waiters at a Scottsdale restaurant on April 15, 1966.

Hearing to determine insanity acquittal confinement in Arizona State Hospital

A scheduled hearing in Maricopa County Superior Court to decide if Mrs. Christensen, charged with murder of her husband in Phoenix, is illegally confined at Arizona State Hospital. The hearing before Judge Robert Myers was moved after her attorney cited bias. Christensen, 59, was committed after psychiatrists found her unable to aid in her defense.

Surveyor 7 halts as Alpha device jams on moon

JPL commanded Surveyor 7 to lower the Alpha scattering device for lunar soil analysis but its deployment mechanism jammed leaving the eight inch square gold plated box suspended three feet above the surface. Ground control attempted taps with the digging scoop and even a brief retro rocket jounce to free the unit.

Two injured in crash at 82nd Street and Camelback

Police said two people suffered minor injuries yesterday in a two car crash at 82nd St and Camelback Rd. Jessica Galentine, 72, of 3811 N 27th Ave and Dennis Bobka, 36, of 238 E Coolidge were identified. Neither required hospital treatment. Bobka’s southbound car on 2nd St hit Galentine’s car after she ran a stop sign. Galentine was cited for failure to stop at a stop sign.

German Lutheran missionary wounded in New Guinea ambush

A German Lutheran missionary was hospitalized with four arrow wounds after an ambush by aboriginal warriors on a remote jungle path in Port Moresby New Guinea. Five of the mission native helpers were killed in the attack.

Gasoline seeping in Archbold sewer sparks evacuation and closures

In Archbold Ohio gasoline leaking into sewer lines triggered a state of emergency. Police Chief George Kramer ordered the main drain closed broad evacuation of two downtown blocks and the closure of 22 businesses and two schools. Deputy Hal Snow warned any spark could ignite fumes. Authorities flushed lines repeatedly as residents feared a major explosion.

Winter YMCA offers twenty classes in Scottsdale area

The Scottsdale YMCA winter programs begin Monday offering twenty courses for youth and adults. Arts include collage and oil painting at First Baptist Church on 7025 FE Osborn Rd. Explosion at Phoenix barber shop under investigation

Authorities probe a blast that demolished a northwest Phoenix barber shop and damaged nearby businesses. Fire officials cite possible natural gas, bomb, or gasoline as causes amid union-related tensions claimed by the shop owner.

Rural Fire Crews Put Out Two Minor Blazes

Rural Fire Department crews extinguished two minor fires on Wednesday. At 2 08 pm brush burning was spotted at Hayden and Camelback Roads and put out. The cause is unknown. A fence fire at 3913 North 81st Street was also extinguished by residents before fire units arrived.

The United States Army Recruiting Service opens a recruiting office in the Scottsdale Post Office lobby at 7242 E. Osborn Rd. The office will interview applicants every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon until 4 30 p.m.

Burglar Strikes Scottsdale Golf Club Pro Shop

Police report a burglary at The Villa Monterey Casita Colony Country Club in Scottsdale. Burglars forced a rear door to enter the golf shop and restaurant, took clothing a $20 bill liquor and other items while bypassing some polo equipment. inventory will determine the total possibly near 8600.
