A Soviet guided missile cruiser the Kresta II is reported steaming southward along the West African coast possibly approaching the Angola area. The armed vessel sailed from the Mediterranean and was last sighted off Mauritania, joining other Russian Navy ships in the region.
Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia joined the 1976 Democratic presidential race. The 57 year old announced a bid in the West Virginia primary on May 11 and did not rule out other primaries. He aims to be seen as more than a favorite son.
In Addis Ababa informal talks aimed to narrow differences ahead of the Organization of African Unity weekend summit on Angola. A spokesman said ministers met to align positions and prepare for the high level gathering.
Beirut town endured its worst night of civil war shelling as Christian and Moslem guerrillas fired mortars and rockets at the capital. Police reported an average of three explosions per minute from midnight onward.

The unit, with plants in Phoenix Mesa Tempe and elsewhere, had laid off about 10,000 worldwide since November 1974 including nearly 8,000 in the Valley.

Americo Mac Carvalho Jr. defends residency claims saying he owns a Scottsdale townhouse and has lived in the city for about 15 years. Paradise Valley voters approved a unanimous $1,000 sewer tapping fee for new homeowners. Lawyers for Murphee-Edmunds and J.W.
