Acting chairman Rep. Al Ullman announced the Ways and Means Committee will approve within two months a multibillion dollar tax cut for low and middle income citizens. He also flagged some relief for corporations and tied the final size of the cut to potential revenue gains from changing the tax structure.
Labor Secretary Peter J. Brennan urged state manpower and employment executives to show understanding toward thousands applying for unemployment benefits for the first time. He noted a record 813,600 people enrolled for jobless relief during Christmas week.
