Train wreck probe closes as two killed near Tucson

The crash occurred when a locomotive rear collided with a train north west of Tucson. Harris and Tessen died, conductor Laran Tirey of Tucson died in the caboose. The commission confirmed Southern Pacific's explanation of cause and may close the probe unless new information emerges. An emergency appropriation would fund two more railway safety officers to cover 3,000 miles of track. The emergency brake activated late, taking five to eight seconds to engage after rain contributed to the impact.
