Johnson's State of the Union pushes tax cut and poverty drive

President Johnson delivers a televised State of the Union urging an $11 billion tax cut to raise take home pay, pledges civil rights reform and medical care for the aged, and calls for bold anti poverty action while stressing transit reforms and expanded federal aid. He notes job growth and higher output but says more is needed to lift families above poverty and despair.

Britain Cannot Stop 400 Cuban Bus Sales

Britain said it cannot block an $11 million sale of 400 Leyland buses to Castro Cuba under a five year contract with an option for 1,000 more. The deal follows prior deliveries to Cuba and comes despite American protests ahead of a summit between Prime Minister Douglas-Home and President Johnson.

Scottsdale School District approves 50 acre site purchases

The Scottsdale School District trustees approved buying five parcels totaling 50 acres for new campuses at Rose Lane, Kiva, Pima, and McDowell Roads with costs ranging from 5 000 to 6 500 dollars per acre. A 20 acre northern site for a future elementary was deferred. The bond funds cover acquisitions and building additions.

Teenage girls steal palomino horse in Mesa

Mesa police recovered a stolen palomino after pursuing three juvenile suspects. Separately, Louis Guzman reported $300 in rare coins missing from his home after an entry through an open window. A pint of tequila and $10 in change were also taken. Police cited footprints under the window and two juveniles as involved. Western Savings and Loan noted $193 in vandalism damage to a vacant house on 81st Way with six windows broken by rocks and B B guns since August.

City approves police car contracts and zoning changes

Madison Chevrolet wins contracts for 14 police vehicles in New Dodge City as city approves five police cars and a sedan. Council also approves a zone change for Madison Development Co to build a car sales complex, praises local chambers, and approves liquor licenses for three venues while denying two others.

Federal Aid Survey Set by Scottsdale School District

Scottsdale School District plans a survey to determine eligibility for federal impact area aid. Superintendent Charles Holt says forms will go to the district's 22 000 students to find if they or their parents are federally employed or work for contractors with the federal government. He is reasonably sure the district does not qualify but intends to settle the issue. The aid provisions come from two public laws recently extended by Congress, granting funds for construction and maintenance to districts with large numbers of federally connected students.
