Castro rises from poverty to governor and diplomat
Raul Castro Arizona's 14th governor embodies the American dream from a poor Cananea birth to a lawyer and diplomat. Born June 12 1916 his family fled to Douglas as prejudice against Mexicans shaped his early life and career. He faced discrimination in teaching and held various jobs before entering the Foreign Service in 1941. He later served as ambassador to El Salvador and Bolivia under Johnson and remains a moderate Democrat who credits work and determination with American success.
