In Washington Defense Secretary McNamara said he and Secretary Rusk share the same stance on bombing North Vietnam to dispel any perceived cabinet split. In Paris Prince Sihanouk announced Hanoi demands an end to U.S. bombing as the condition for peace talks. In Beirut Jordan accuses Israeli forces of a border clash, while in London George Raft is barred from Britain over gambling concerns.
Phoenix reports the State House passed a bill revamping the State Liquor Department in five minutes with no debate. The Senate met briefly and recessed without debating scheduled bills. A separate measure to provide up to 50 000 dollars yearly from the general fund to support symphony orchestras was removed from the Senate schedule.
UPI reports Senator Carl Hayden voices opposition to a state funded Central Arizona Project, arguing it would impose heavy tax burdens on Arizona taxpayers. He favors a federal approach to bring Colorado River water to Phoenix and Tucson, with funding via alternative methods beyond increased taxes.
Legislative leaders set September 25 as tentative date for a special session on Arizona’s property tax reform. Rep Tony Buehl said final figures on the four year old reappraisal program won’t be ready until April 30 and warned preliminary work must be evaluated for its impact on taxpayers. The plan aims to launch in time for the 1969 tax rolls as hearings begin in September and an advisory committee and research staff prepare a final report by mid-September.
New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison declared the Kennedy assassination solved and promised arrests and convictions of all involved. He noted the Ferrie death is being treated as non murder and said a businessmen group will fund his continued investigation amid forecast of mild, cloudy weather.
Chou En-lai disclosed the death of a veteran cabinet minister after over 40 days of questioning by Red Guards. He urged end to attacks by fanatical youths as Red Guards clashed with anti-Mao forces in Canton. Peking Radio reported a large Shanghai rally backing Mao and readiness to act for war and calamities.
Boston Strangler Albert H. DeSalvo escaped from Bridgewater State Hospital with two inmates after freeing third floor cells and climbing an elevator shaft. The trio fled while a wide manhunt was launched as authorities warn the public and victims’ families react to the dramatic escape.
The Scottsdale School District advisory subcommittee proposes five new middle schools and converting Hopi School into a middle school. A central 800 seat and 600 seat middle schools are planned for eighth graders from multiple feeder schools, plus an elementary to house about 1,000 K-6 students north of Mohave School.
Scottsdale events present Verde Vaqueros two day fundraiser for the Scottsdale Boys Club. Monday features a charity barbecue and a 125 horse display, gymkhana and Indian dances. Tuesday includes a mounted parade and a trail ride setup at Horse Country Club ahead of Wednesday start.
The Arizona House Education Committee approved a bill to let school districts set up state aided kindergartens with local funding and state help. The vote was 7 to 1 amid opposition in the House and Senate. Estimated first-year cost is 7.5 million dollars with 3.7 million from the state.
Two runaway juveniles were detained by police yesterday for burglary at a Scottsdale home. Officers said the youths fled from a Phoenix children's home after stealing a rifle pistol watch and radio from Mrs. Jean Forsythe at 15401 North Scottsdale Road. Items valued at about 240 dollars were recovered.
