Democrats urge Nixon to withdraw forces from Indochina

Senate Democrats adopt a five part resolution calling for a total pullout of U.S. forces from Indochina at a time certain. The measure passed 31 to 8 at a closed party meeting amid debate over whether a precise deadline should be set. It seeks completion before the 92nd Congress ends and would not have legal force.

Arizona Revenue Sharing Totals Estimated at 51 Million

Senator Paul Fannin announced the Nixon administration revenue sharing bill would yield about 51.3 million dollars for Arizona in its first year. Local allocations include 12.4 million for cities, 8.5 million for counties, Tucson and Phoenix receive 2.6 and 6.3 million respectively, Maricopa County about 3.83 million. Fannin called the estimates encouraging as federal deficits loom.

Oklahoma man sentenced for kidnapping in Scottsdale case

Stephen Herndon, 19, and accomplice Ben Oldfield, 21, were sentenced to 9 to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of kidnapping in the abduction of Thomas Verbil, 20, and his girlfriend. Verbil aided by authorities, said the pair pulled knives and forced him to drive to Jerome where he was robbed and left along the road. The suspects also faced assault with a deadly weapon charges which were dismissed. a car theft count was dropped.

Burglaries Hit Pima School And Local Homes

Police say over the weekend thieves entered Pima School by a broken library window and stole tape recorders and $1 in change. Separate burglaries report entries at Motel 6 on Camelback, Bruce Bosley residence, Walter Roskam garage, and Jack Canyon residence, with losses including cash, a saw, tires, and a clock totaling several hundred dollars.

City approves sale of three million water bonds bids

The City Council approved selling 3 million dollars in Water District bonds and set bids for half to be due March 22. One million will finance Indian Water Company purchase, with the rest to fund future improvements and enlargement of existing facilities. Dale Carter said funds should be ready to expedite purchase when the contract is signed.

Indiana man charged in rape at Safari Hotel

Tucker, 32, of Kootenai Ind was arrested at 6 25 this morning on a rape charge after a 16 year old girl told police she was assaulted in a Safari Hotel room about three hours earlier. He gave a false name then took her to his room where the rape occurred police found items possibly belonging to the victim in the room.

Stolen blasting caps and powder reported near Carefree

Sheriff’s deputies in Maricopa County investigated a weekend theft of 500 blasting caps and 100 pounds of blasting powder valued at 150 dollars from the Seven Springs Mine northeast of Carefree. Bearup Jr. of Phoenix reported the loss.

US Justice official names top challenges for nation

Deputy Attorney General Richard Kleindienst told a Western Regional US Attorneys conference that organized crime drugs civil rights and antitrust are among the top challenges facing the United States He urged free press coverage of radical dissenters saying they lose when heard and called for far reaching legislation and resources to combat drug problems.
