Navajo Audit Request Sways GAO Toward Federal Probe
Tribal Chairman Peter MacDonald sought a GAO audit of Navajo fiscal affairs in 1976. A May 4 1976 letter from Senators Goldwater and Fannin urged tribal council endorsement and a formal GAO request. The GAO later reported extensive audits, some documenting internal weaknesses and the theft of federal funds. Indictments of Navajo figures followed in early 1976 as the DOJ FBI probe began.
