Bridgeport faced 66 mph winds Thursday after a Weather Bureau storm warning signal failed to go up and the signal tower was blown down. No warning prior to the high wind event was issued.
Bonnie Rose Bartos settled a six month dispute by paying $2.50 monthly sewer fees in full. The case began when Bartos, living at 8350 FE, faced a $89.50 arrears and a $100 fine after a City Court ruling. The Arizona Supreme Court upheld the challenge to the conviction on grounds of potential jail time if unpaid. City officials announced the bill is now paid and no further action is expected.
Chicago Cubs manager Leo Durocher will headline Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce's 20th annual banquet at the Safari Hotel. The event features two community service awards for Scottsdale Sertoma Club and Girls Club. Dr. Bill Welch to become president, five new directors named, about 509 attendees expected.
The Scotts dale School District advisory group approved a seven point guide covering library art and music renovations and flexible attendance area boundaries. It calls for reallocating pupils to less crowded buildings where possible and maintaining special classrooms for typical and mentally retarded children. The plan also sets pupil-per-classroom targets per grade band and requires facilities to support a broad educational program with specialized staff.
A Senate bill by Carl Hayden and Paul Fannin would authorize the Central Arizona Project without Grand Canyon dams. It envisions an aqueduct from Lake Havasu to central Arizona powered by a WEST built thermal plant with government financing for pumping capacity. Co sponsors include Henry Jackson.
Michigan Governor George Romney will address a joint session of the Arizona legislature at 10 am in Phoenix. He will attend a Republican party meeting at 8:44 am and then travel to Dreamland Villa for Joseph Farnsworth's 71st birthday barbecue before departing from Sky Harbor at 4 pm.
U S Marines and South Vietnamese troops launch Rio Grande eight miles west of Quang Ngai as part of a coordinated push across the Central Highlands and coastal regions. In the first hours the offensive claims about 100 enemy killed while allied losses remain light.
Reports from Hong Kong indicate a widening revolt against Mao Zedong with fighting in four provinces and clashes reported in two others. Western diplomats note rumors Mao is partially paralyzed after visiting China.
The State Senate passed a campus regulation bill by 22 to 6 with bipartisan opposition. Three Republicans and three Democrats opposed. 10 Democrats and 12 Republicans supported. The House passed its ethics and anti-bribery bill without dissent, while the Senate plans to reject it. A conference committee will be named to resolve differences.
Conductor Guy Taylor leads the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra in a family concert at Coronado High School auditorium tonight at 8 p.m. The program features Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz filling the night alongside Beethoven Fifth Symphony excerpt, Stravinsky Petrouchka, Haydn London Minuet, Brahms Academic Festival Overture, and selections from West Side Story. Tickets available at the door and at Community box offices.
