Scottsdale voters head to the polls on Tuesday for a pivotal primary with four council seats open. Twenty five candidates compete as a record 4,423 residents are registered to vote and determine the path to the March 28 general election, City Clerk Dorothy Ketchum reported. The outcome could influence the fast growing city’s future trajectory.
In Phoenix the house saw sharp exchanges as a minority tactic aimed at amending the public accommodations bill and outlawing the Communist party. Rep. John Haugh repeatedly used a parliamentary maneuver to push for interracial marriage language, but was ruled out of order each time. The session also notes municipal election details and candidate names for local seats in a charter election, including Kelley and Hutchins.
The Girls Club of Scottsdale appointed Steve Bridge as president and elected Barbara Clark Lee Le Clerc Moya Kelley and Mrs Vernon Cannon to new posts at yesterday’s board meeting. They discussed a benefit ballet by Ruth Sussman Studio students at Scottsdale High School auditorium with proceeds to the Girls Club fund. Tickets at 8:30 p.m. tomorrow and 2:30 p.m. Sunday cost 1.50 for adults and 0.50 for children. The Scottsdale Board of Adjustment denied variances for three new service stations and limited a fourth. A Mobile station at 145 West McDowell Road faced denial for a 10 by 20 feet sign 25 feet high. Humble Oil canopy signs at 68th Street and Thomas Road and at Continental and Scottsdale Road were denied for size 11 by 30 feet. An El Paso canopy sign at 81st Street and East Indian Road was approved with stipulations.
Scottsdale Postmaster C C Wilson reports total mail volume for 1961 up 33 percent from 1960 with postal receipts rising 10 percent. January 1961 cancellations reached 581000 versus 436000 in January 1960, and the four week period ending Feb 4 shows receipts of 40780 against 37077 the year before.
Paradise Valley Improvement Association weighs incorporation after bylaw changes. A committee led by Patrick Downey will study feasibility with Joseph Clifford Sterling Hebbard Raymond Mitchell as members. Previous petition to incorporate failed when 500 residents and two thirds of taxpayers could not be gathered. Downey notes the scope of any new effort is undecided.
Scottsdale Jaycees nominate Bill Moore as parade float chair to pursue a fourth consecutive trophy in the Phoenix Jaycee Rodeo Parade. The parade theme Howdy Pardner promotes Valley hospitality.
Eleven Scottsdale Lions traveled to Phoenix to join the Sahuarro Lions at a recent meeting. James Tilley district manager for Mountain States Telephone spoke on community benefits from private profits.
In Tucson officer cited after a long board protruding from a car window struck a construction barricade and then hit driver John Robert Crooks wounding him and smashing a windshield. Crooks lost control and struck a fire hydrant. police charged him with destruction of city property.
Maricopa County dog clinic will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow in the Scottsdale High School parking lot. Dogs must be leashed. License fees are 2.50 for males and spayed females, and 5 for females.
The Scottsdale Committee on Conversational Spanish argues for teaching Spanish in 15 local elementary schools for under 75 000 dollars a year. Mrs. Jordan Paine leads the proposal to the school board and plans a public meeting Monday night at the Valley Club.
Representative Don Reese lauded Scottsdale’s new daily, The Scottsdale Daily, on the House floor. He commended editor Gene McLain of the Progress as a splendid reporter and predicted he will become a splendid editor.
The Friends of the Scottsdale Library accept the city’s offer for a 10,000 square foot library on First Street, funded by a $2,500 McCune Foundation grant, with plans for a $30,000 to $40,000 volume collection. Construction aimed within 13 months, and fundraising will precede city operation.
Scottsdale will be the scene of the 1961 annual meeting of the Arizona Recreation Association November 16 to 18. About 400 delegates attended the 1960 meeting in Yuma. Clarence Allen of the Scotts dale Parks and Recreation Department directed the event. New committee appointments were announced. Local appointees include ASU Professor Ronald Thompson as chairman of constitution and by laws and Anne Pittman of the ASU physical education faculty as chairman of research and study.

The Seatsdale Chamber of Commerce board hears a museum project plan led by Chairman Paul Haldermann. Key recommendations call for immediate appointment of a museum committee to define phases and solicitations to locate a suitable city center outside the downtown area. The group names artist Loyd Kiva and gallery figures Bill O’Brien Deke Koppes Harley Kelley Messinger Raymond Mitchell Dick Houseworth as representatives.
The city's recreation department reports about 800 participants in programs across three schools and the community center during the first week. Floyd Leavitt at Su pai School notes over 300 students joined playground activities while Richard Solem at Soloma School oversaw 250 participants. Scottsdale High School leaders and Earl Boroughs prepared a teen program to be announced next week amid several picnics and planned clubs. Registrations ongoing at the center WH 5 7890 for a proposed chess club. A daily 4 to 5 pm recreation program for grades 5 through 8 runs at Saloma or Our Lady of Perpetual Help schools.
A 6-year-old Scottsdale girl was lured to a house under construction by a man who claimed to be her friend. He drove her from near her home, made advances, and fled when another child neared the window. The incident was reported three hours later. police sought a description of the suspect and his car.
