Fred Cowan, a 35 year old New Rochelle man, armed and wearing a Nazi uniform, shot and killed at least five people including Officer Allen McLeod and wounded three others. He held two hostages at the Neptune Moving Co warehouse as police tried to negotiate after a lengthy siege.
In Hollandsburg Indiana four brothers aged 14 to 22 were shot to death in their isolated mobile home in an execution like slaying. The mother Betty Spencer 41 was wounded and escaped by playing dead as attackers fled in a family car. Police described the incident as an execution type killing.
United Steelworkers announce ground breaking bargaining aims to secure lifetime job guarantees for its half million members in the basic steel industry as talks start on a new three year contract with management. Foreign Secretary Anthony Crosland reportedly ill in hospital after suspected stroke, according to a government spokesman.
