Thousands of tourists were stranded after avalanches on Tuesday at Val d Isere. The resort reopened lower slopes and promised higher runs by Saturday while a nine member commission met to investigate the disaster. Officials said about 2,000 of 6,000 skiers had left before renewed slides dumped snow over Route 202 to Bourg-St. Maurice.
A benefit coyote hunt will be held at 4202 Union Hills Dr on Saturday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to raise funds for the Arizona Boys Community. Hunters pay a $2 donation, must carry shotguns and hold a 1970 hunting license, with goals to raise about $5,000 within 900 days to buy land for expansion of the ABC school.

Burton Ritenburgh died Wednesday in a Phoenix hospital at 92. Rites will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Mesa Cemetery for the Woodland Michigan native who moved to Phoenix in 1928. Survivors include two daughters Audrey Bigelow and Ruth Whatcott both of Mesa, 16 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Arrangements by A L Moore and Sons Mortuary.
Communist guerrillas shelled Hue overnight and shot down two U S helicopters. Twenty three Allied soldiers, including seven Americans, were injured in crashes. Overall air actions since Sunday killed or wounded nearly 90 Allies. seven helicopters and one reconnaissance plane were lost this week.
A kitchen blaze at the Carefree International restaurant was extinguished by Rural firemen after arriving at 12:10 p.m. Thursday. No cause was found and damage was reported as minimal. Separately, fire crews doused a trash-bin fire in an alley behind Los Arcos Mall at about 2:23 p.m. Thursday. origin remains unknown.
Tools valued at 933 dollars were reported stolen from Scottsdale Foreign Car Service at 1620 N 7th St. The break in occurred between 9 p.m. Wednesday and 7 30 a.m. Thursday. Police said a key was used to enter the building and the thieves seemed to know the location of the tools.
A panel of 20 private economists predicts inflation around 4.5 percent this year, down from 4.7 percent in 1969, with real economic growth limited to about 1 percent. The group’s outlook is slightly less optimistic than the White House projection of a 4.3 percent inflation and just over 1 percent growth for the year. Police seek Bruce Fredrick Harlan a 14 year old Springerville boy who disappeared Sunday after a movie at the Kachina Theatre. He is described as 4'11" tall, 175 pounds with brown hair hazel eyes and braces. He reportedly contacted a female friend by phone Monday but has not been heard from since following a dispute with his stepfather over grades.
The Defense Department reports that 54.2 percent of Army noncommissioned officers killed in Vietnam were draftees, though draftees are 36.4 percent of the Army’s worldwide strength. It denies any policy to favor draftees for front line roles, noting draftees cannot choose jobs and often end up as riflemen in dangerous combat.
