Communist Tank Assault Overruns Lang Vei Camp

U.S. Army Special Forces camp Lang Vei near the Laos border is overrun by Soviet built T-54 tanks in the first major Communist tank attack. Green Berets reportedly defend underground bunkers while civilians flee. Casualty figures not released.

Marines Fight Off Viet Cong Near Khe Sanh With T34s

UPI reports heavy combat as Marine forces defend Khe Sanh and Lang Vei from a Communist assault. U.S. planes and artillery bombarded tanks, bunkers, and gun nests while Marines fought in cement shelters and raked the area with napalm and shells. In Hue area operations, Marines and South Vietnamese troops moved house to house, clearing the New Town area and Lei Ly barracks after fierce resistance waned.

U.S. Marines Raise Flag Over Hue Then Remove It

Marines who raised the U S flag over Hue’s province headquarters had to lower it after diplomatic sensitivities. Lt Col Ernie Cheatham said the operation broke the enemy’s back in Thua Thien province and operations now face only scattered resistance. U S spokesmen reported 1713 Communist deaths in Hue with light Allied losses.

Scottsdale Indian Arts Exhibition judges named

1400 entries compete in the seventh Scottsdale National Indian Arts Exhibition judged Saturday at Charnkigys Moving warehouse Hinton and Second Street. Adult and student painters crafts and creative writing face judging with 700 paintings 4,000 crafts items and 151 writing pieces from Indians nationwide ahead of March 2 to 10 at the Executive House.

Copper talks gain momentum as companies invite bargaining

Governor Williams said several copper firms will discuss the current seven month strike. Unions have not replied to his invitation. He called the move a step forward and urged labor to accept, while leaving companywide bargaining for later.

Arizona braces for flu surge warns of potential epidemic

Health Commissioner Dr. Spendlove said Arizona saw 3840 flu cases in five weeks versus a five year average of 1800. He noted deaths from respiratory infections had not yet risen but warned the uptick could bring more fatalities in the near term.

Woman injured in two car crash at Granite Reef and Indian School

A 57 year old Scottsdale woman Thelma Mason was injured in a two car collision at the Granite Reef Road and Indian School Road intersection. Police said Mason did not require hospitalization and was cited for failure to yield the right of way. Sharon Ann Walker, 22, the other driver, was not hurt.

Navy board probes sink of ship hit by Bullpup missile

A Navy A4 Skyhawk fired a Bullpup missile during morning exercises two miles off POINT MUGU CALIF. The weapon hit an 85 foot rescue boat laden with fuel, blowing six crewmen into the water. five had minor injuries, one engineer J C Levi Harwill of Newbury Park was hospitalized with puncture wounds. The warhead was defused and officials said the cause is under investigation.
