US says Communists not serious about Vietnam peace talks

Secretary of State Dean Rusk said the bombing pause was a gesture to start negotiations but Hanoi showed no serious interest in talks. Assistant Secretary Bundy noted Hanoi and Hai Phong had seen no bombings for 18 days and warned explorations may resume only if conditions improve.

Trial resumes in Chicago bomb plot case against executive

The trial of Earle T. Conk a Naperville executive charged with planting a bomb on an American Airlines flight involving his wife Jeanne and 80 others entered its second week in U S District Court. The state accuses him of planning the attack to kill his wife while she and their two sons faced danger.

Javits urges stalemate admission and diplomatic settlement in Vietnam

Senator Javits declares Vietnam is in a stalemate and urges the Johnson administration to concede this and pursue a political and diplomatic settlement with Russia. He warns Moscow would seek a bombing halt and negotiations, signaling a possible end to the war. Also, Percy Morton and Bayh criticize U S handling and call for honesty and anti corruption measures.

Two injured in Mesa two car collision

Police reported two people were injured in a two car crash at Hayden and McDowell Roads in Mesa. Beverly Earl, 27, and Gerald Richards, 30, suffered non life threatening injuries. Earl drove eastbound and Richards was a passenger. Edmond Jane, 61, of Tempe was cited for failure to yield after his westbound car turned in front of Earl’s vehicle.

Girl 13 Injured After Fall Into Canal Near Osborn Road

Scottsdale police and fire crews removed 13 year old Jenny Saunders from a dry Cross Cut Canal near Osborn Road using an attic ladder. She had a broken leg and was treated at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital and released. Separate weekend incidents included vehicle fires on Granite Reef Road and Valley View Road, a second car fire on Starflight Way, and a legal burning citation for A W Baumann. A Scottsdale MLS talk set for February 7 will discuss effective classified advertising with guest speaker Roland D Ptak.

Visitor reports theft of $400 at Safari Motel pool

An Illinois visitor from Palatine reports $400 stolen from his Safari Motel room in Scottsdale while he swam at the pool. The burglary occurred Saturday between 4:30 and 4:45 p.m. No forced entry was found.

Heart screening program for Scottsdale fourth graders announced

Scottsdale Elementary Schools begin a heart screening program for all fourth graders under the Scottsdale Heart Unit. The screening uses an electronic Phono Cardio-San instrument to detect abnormal heart sounds, with results reviewed by the school nurse and shared with the School Board at the next meeting. About 1,972 students were screened last year with 7.3 percent showing suspicious signs. this year educators expect about 2,250 students to be scanned.
