A fire triggered explosion at Thiokol Chemical Corp munitions plant in Woodbine Georgia killed 25 people and injured 38. The blast hurled bodies up to 400 feet, shattered a large facility, and was felt as far as 50 miles away. Witnesses recall flames and someone shouting fire before the blast.
A suspect identified as Larry Ward, 23, of 8475 E Chaparral, was arrested January 28 after allegedly driving into a police car during a chase. Ward, who had given police a false name Keith Lawson, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon and two counts of aggravated assault. Officers initially recorded the wrong address.
A motorcycle driven by 17 year old Mark Dermond of 3800 East San Miguel veered onto the curb near East Berridge Lane in Paradise Valley. Dermond and 16 year old Barbara Olbricht of 6440 Monterosa were treated and released at Doctor’s Hospital Phoenix. Dermond was cited for speeding and both teens for not wearing helmets.
A force of 20 000 South Vietnamese backed by 9 000 U S troops and air power massed on the Laos border amid reports of a South Vietnamese foray into Laos forthcoming. U S and South Vietnamese troops also swept northwestern South Vietnam while another 21 600 South Vietnamese forces and unspecified Cambodians moved toward two Communist divisions. The buildup aims to deter Hanoi's staging area near Sepone and slow Ho Chi Minh supply routes. China warned it will support Communist forces until final victory. Muong Suoi in Laos was described as threatened as fighting intensified along the regional frontier.
Scottsdale High School students host a talent show at 7 30 tonight in the school auditorium to raise funds for the American Field Service chapter. The event supports sending students abroad and sponsoring a foreign student at the school next year. Tickets cost 75 cents at the door.

UPI reports the nation’s railroads reached tentative agreements with the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes and the Hotel and Restaurant Emplees Union, covering about 93 000 workers. Progress with the Brotherhood of Railways and Airline Clerks and the United Transportation Union remains limited as Congress debates emergency powers and a March 1 strike deadline.
Firefighters responded to a burning stolen 1967 Demas Volkswagen on 58th Street just north of Thomas Road. About 350 gallons of water were used to control the blaze with $1,000 damage and unknown cause. A separate call reported a telephone wire blown down at 7134 E. Thomas Rd with no damage.

A 16 year old Tempe youth, James E. Roach, sustained minor injuries Wednesday afternoon while practicing a Western skit for Parada del Sol near Pima Road. He was treated and released from Scottsdale Baptist Hospital after a blank shot fired by 16 year old Coronado High student Dave Williams.
The Communists accused the United States of covering up actions in Laos and Cambodia, while U S Ambassador Bruce rebutted that Hanoi massed forces into Laos Cambodia and South Vietnam in defiance of international law and agreements.
