Burns Criticizes Carters 50 Dollar Tax Rebates Plan
Federal Reserve Chairman Arthur Burns called President Carters 50 rebate proposal an inefficient way to stimulate the economy while acknowledging overall support for growth efforts. He noted the treasury would borrow the money and advised against such a policy. Humphrey warned cold weather would erode rebates and raise household fuel costs, with a Library of Congress study estimating 139 dollars per family and potential wage losses from plant shutdowns.
