Look Magazine and William Manchester settle a suit against the Chicago Daily News over published material from The Death of a President. Editor Roy Fisher says the Daily News will honor future release dates.
Legislation by Republican Sam Flake of Scottsdale targets campus disturbances. It bans disorderly conduct obstruction obscene language failure to disperse and distributing material urging treason or law breaches. Hearing into State Fair Commission finances continues with Ralph Painter and Kemper Marley testimonies.
Peter Boulay announced formation of a professional council in the Scottsdale School District to provide ongoing opportunities for teachers, board members, and administrators to study mutual interests. The council will include a faculty member from each of 22 schools, all five board members with two designated officials, and district administrators. Four faculty seats will be elected with a Feb. 14 runoff to choose delegate and alternate for a one year term.
Parada del Sol in Scottsdale runs three days with rodeo actions starting today at 2 p.m. Kids Day offers 1 admission for high school age or younger. Saturday features a parade at 10 a.m. from Shoeman Lane to Scottsdale Road and a 2 p.m. rodeo performance followed by an 8 p.m. cowpoke event. Sunday concludes with a 2 p.m. rodeo finale.
The Senate rejected the House version of the Smog Control Act, appointing three members from each chamber to a conference committee. Senate Republicans Isabel Burgess and Bob Wilcox and Democrat Harold Giss will meet with Maricopa Republicans Frank Kelley and Delos Ellsworth and Pima Democrat Sam Seno. House support for tougher penalties and county action drew opposition from rural Democrats.
Fans packed the Parada del Sol grounds for the opening rodeo show while Scottsdale police braced for about 100000 parade-goers Saturday morning. The rodeo offers shows at 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday with a $14500 purse. A large parade runs from Camelback Road to McDowell Road starting Saturday at 10 a.m. Traffic guidance directs east side parking for eastbound attendees and west side parking for westbound guests. The Hashknife Gang reenacts the Pony Express arriving at the Post Office, and 20 amateur radio operators will monitor the route with 25 mobile units and fixed stations under Scottsdale Amateur Radio Club oversight. Tickets remain at Jaycee office, with events at Hinton and Osborn Roads.
Soviet jets will run round trips between Moscow and Peking for four consecutive days to evacuate about 200 wives and children of Soviet representatives in China. The move follows persistent Chinese demonstrations and the embassy staff dismissal amid rising Sino Soviet tensions.

The Washington Post, cited by UPI, reports Luci Johnson Nugent is expecting a baby in June. The article notes her parents know of the pregnancy but will not publicly discuss it until Luci chooses to announce it. Luci and Patrick Nugent married last August at Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
The Salt River Project expects little or no flow into the Salt River bed south of Scottsdale this spring as snowpack in the Salt and Verde watersheds runs about 30 percent of normal. An estimated 280 000 acre feet of water may reach SRP reservoirs by May end, roughly matching projected surface water use for Valley users over four months, leaving unfilled reservoir capacity near 400 000 acre feet and slim chances of releases into the river bed.
An unidentified Miami man told a police informant in a secretly recorded conversation that Kennedy was a marked man and that an assassination could be carried out from an office building with a high powered rifle. The talk occurred November 9, 1963 and was turned over to the Secret Service. The informant said a White House balcony strike was also possible. No identities were disclosed.
