Viet Cong hails U S talks on prisoner release

In Paris the Viet Cong hailed a planned meeting with U S negotiators on Christmas Day in South Vietnam to discuss freeing three American prisoners. The NLF called the Tay Ninh talks a victory for recognition while U S officials avoided comment.

Two Car Crash Injures Toddler on McDowell Road

A two car collision on McDowell Road west of Scottsdale injures a toddler and strains local responders. David Evans age 2 was treated at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital and released. Fred D. Evans 63 faced no serious injuries. George C. Yutze 735 Phoenix was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

Allies join in truce amid Christmas cease-fire in Vietnam

Nearly 15 million U S and South Vietnamese troops joined Communist forces in a 72 hour truce starting at 1 am Christmas truce marred by Viet Cong mortar fire near Sai gon. Casualties reported light as allied troops observed a 24 hour cease-fire and other actions paused for the holiday.

Pueblo crew returns home after captivity ordeal

The USS Pueblo sailors arrive at a San Diego naval base after 11 months in captivity. Cmdr. Lloyd Bucher recalls torture and camera ordeals while stressing no brainwashing. Crew members describe threats of beatings and death, with one saying crossing the Bridge of No Return felt like Hell. Families greet them for a Christmas reunion.

Burglary Strikes Church and Schools in Scottsdale Area

Police report losses totaling about 1000 dollars across multiple sites. The Church of the Nazarene on Hayden Road suffered cash and checks stolen from the pastor's study after a door lock was forced. Coronado High School experienced a break in with a tape recorder and cash taken and windows broken. Mohave School shows attempted entry with fire set to a window sill. no losses yet but an inventory is pending. A witness saw several youths leaving the grounds carrying an object around 9:15 PM.
