The Labor Department reports a 0.6 percent jump in consumer prices in November, the largest in five months, driven by food and higher auto costs. Food prices up 0.6 percent, other goods up 0.5 percent, new car prices up 1.5 percent, while fuel oil and coal fell 0.8 percent.
About 50 to 60 underprivileged children from area reservations and Guadalupe will be bused to Scottsdale Nursing Center for a Christmas party hosted by 90 residents. Residents made stuffed dolls and clowns with help from a Scottsdale Church of Christ group and Craft Cranny volunteers. Deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department will transport children via a Rapport Foundation bus, then return them home after the event with Santa and Mrs. Claus distributing gifts.
A former Scottsdale city official, Marcel G. Stragier, 45, was indicted by a federal grand jury on two counts for false statements to HEW while public works director. He allegedly claimed no use of city grant funds for a refuse container invention and identified as inventor in a patent filing. He was arraigned and released on recognizance amid a related $11 million patent suit later dismissed.
Seven of eight announced candidates for Scottsdale City Council have filed nomination petitions for the February 21 primary. DPS confirms reopening after earlier closure notices and follows complaints from Scottsdale resident Brian Hungerford linked to a secret committee. The probe could lead to charges by the Maricopa County attorney’s office.
