Nantucket reports a Liberian tanker the Argo Merchant split in two during a violent storm. Coast Guard crews search the wreckage where the vessel carried about 7.6 million gallons of heavy oil.
Yucca Flat Nevada reports another weapons related underground nuclear test by the Energy Research and Development Administration this morning. The device lay 1,082 feet underground and exploded at 6 09 a m MST. The blast was not felt in Las Vegas about 90 miles away.
Police report two armed men robbed a Brink's truck at a downtown Montreal shopping center of about $525 000 with no injuries. Earlier, in March, a Brink's armored truck was robbed of $2.8 million outside a downtown bank.
Washington farm leaders praise President-elect Carter for selecting Rep. Bob Bergland a working farmer from Minnesota to head agriculture. Bergland, who runs 600 acres of spring wheat and grass seed, would be closer to farming than any previous secretary this century.
In Jerusalem on Monday night Yitzhak Rabin announced his resignation as a tactical move to outflank rivals in the Labor party and force a pre election vote. The move aims to shift Israel toward peace talks with Arabs while hedging against a rising centrist challenge.
The forecast calls for sunny weather today and Wednesday with little temperature change. Highs will be in the mid 60s and the lows tonight near 40.
City reports fiscal year to date sales taxes total $2,296,291 up from $1,937,857 a year earlier while calendar year to date collections reach $5,135,639 versus $4,443,728 last year. November gains include hotels and motels up 64.18 percent and car dealers up 49.28 percent.
President elect Carter named Harold Brown as defense secretary and Ray Marshall to head labor. Patricia Roberts Harris was named HUD secretary, becoming the second woman and first Black in the Carter Cabinet. Other nominees included An drew Young as UN ambassador and James Schlesinger set as energy chief.
The Arcadia panel unanimously approved a pilot middle school at Ingleside for 1977-78 and recommended all remaining elementary schools become kindergarten through sixth grade facilities after two years of operation. Plans call for Hopi to run K-8 for parents unwilling to send seventh and eighth graders to the middle school, with K-6 at Kachina Kaibab and Tavan. A two-year transition easing possible closures was proposed amid mixed parent survey results showing 58 percent support among respondents. The board will discuss Jan 4 with a final vote due Jan 18.
Scottsdale awaits a HUD decision on how many housing units it may run under its second year Section 8 program led by Timothy Bray. Maricopa County will receive 2.9 million dollars for subsidies mainly for low income families with some elderly and handicapped units.
Rural Metro Fire Department and sponsor Thomas Barrett reach a safety plan for the Dec 29 to Jan 2 auction at Safari Hotel. Two permits outline setup requirements and compliance, with limits on canopies 60 cars, 30 walkers, 1800 seating, and 365 cars on site at once. Nine deputies plus three sheriffs to patrol, display lanes and fire lane specified. Barrett says future exhibit may move between Scottsdale and Carefree.
Phoenix City Council approved participation in a regional flood control study covering the northeast valley. Scottsdale Paradise Valley and the Maricopa County Flood Control District already joined. The study aims to hire a consultant to draft flood control recommendations for the area from Tatum Boulevard to Pima Road, costing about 40000 with Scottsdale 19160, Phoenix 14200, Paradise Valley 3240 and the district 3400.
