President Zulfiquar Ali Bhutto appoints Nurul Ami as vice president and chief martial law administrator. He urges national patience to restore democracy after a 14 day war with India and vows to reclaim East Pakistan. Seven generals are retired and new defense leadership named as Islamabad reports show limited combat activity.
India announced a unilateral cease fire and Yahya Khan agreed to go along. Indian authorities arrested Abdul Quadir Siddiqui known as Tiger Killer, a 25 year old rebel leader accused of leading the vengeance killings at the Dacca racetrack. Four men were killed after being charged with looting and attempting to kidnap women. Bhutto urged a political settlement reuniting the eastern wing now called the People’s Republic of Bangla Desh.
Environmental Developers of Denver will appeal a Scottsdale ruling requiring them to connect to the city water system and pay for interior lines for an 880 unit project at Camelback and Hayden. The council meets at 8 p.m. at city hall to hear the case and other zoning matters including liquor in neighborhoods and parking limits.
A four vehicle crash at Scottsdale and Thomas Roads sent Barbara Markiewicz and Gail Rue both 23 and 26 of Tempe to Scottsdale Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released. Charles Major 47 of 3002 N Scottsdale Rd was cited for failure to yield on a left turn.
Mayor Bud Tims and the City Council invite boys and girls to decorate the city Christmas tree at 7 PM before the 8 PM council meeting. Christmas carols will be sung and candy canes distributed to participating children.
Speaker Carl Albert accused President Nixon of slowing the economy and said Congress must push him to fight inflation and unemployment. Albert defended the first session of the 92nd Congress and outlined reforms while noting rising cost of living, unemployment, and welfare rolls.
Police report a color television taken from an unoccupied guest room at the Executive House on Scottsdale Road with no signs of forced entry as thieves pried it loose from moldings between Friday 4 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. Also stolen were a pellet rifle and cash from J and W Rents on Scottsdale Road after breaking an east office window.
Forty three dollars were added today to the Art Silverman Kidney Machine Fund, boosting the total to 3081. Silverman, a Tonto School science teacher who recently lost kidney function, may receive donations via Art Silverman Fund P.O. Box 1150 Scottsdale.
