Navy surgeon Lt Cmdr James Chandler removed a live rifle grenade lodged at the base of a Marine’s tongue after a 5 hour operation south of Da Nang. The 20 year old Marine had been wounded in patrols. Chandler recalled spotting the object on X ray and finally extracting it with his fingers. He said the patient should recover in three to six weeks.
A major snow system stretches from the northern Rockies to New England with up to nine inches in Maryland and Hartford four inches. Wisconsin reports four deaths linked to the storm as milder southern regions remain mostly clear. Oklahoma City records a 73 degree high while International Falls drops to five degrees.
An 18 year old Scottsdale woman Catherine Parr was thrown from a car that struck a power pole on Scottsdale Road near Indian Bend Road yesterday. She was treated for minor injuries at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital.Passenger Frances Louise Ong, also 18, was uninjured. Deputies said the vehicle veered off the road after a right rear tire blew out around 5 PM.
Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin met Turkish Premier Suleyman Demirel for a second round of talks in Ankara aimed at easing tensions and boosting relations. He ignored a bitter anti Russian welcome from mobs, and stressed the desire to promote friendly policy toward Turkey.
Buel Ray Wortham, 25, of North Little Rock Arkansas, was sentenced to three years for stealing a 45 pound Russian bear statue and for currency black marketeering that earned 30 dollars. His companion received a fine and may remain as a witness. The sentences run concurrently.
Dow Jones at 2 p.m. EST shows mixed gains and losses across major firms. Stocks such as Ford Motors and General Electric move within narrow ranges while others like United Aircraft and US Steel rise modestly.
A 72-year-old man, Frank Stitt of Belew New Mexico, was found along the Santa Fe Railroad tracks about 35 miles west of Kingman after apparently falling from a speeding train. He suffered deep facial cuts, stomach bruises, and leg scratches but no broken bones. he was described as in pretty bad shape and hospitalized in Kingman General Hospital. Deputy R.G. Burford located him after blood was seen on ties, and Mojave County Jeep Posse members helped move him to an ambulance on US Route 66.
Three Scottsdale women became naturalized American citizens in a U S District Court ceremony. Genevieve Beteille Derickson Elsa Stehouwer and Cindy Jane De Grant received their citizenship and American flags from the Phoenix Elks Lodge. Derickson formerly from France Stehouwer from the Netherlands and De Grant from Great Britain.
