Panama coup fallout as two junta members face subversion trials

Brig Gen Omar Torrijos placed Cols Jose Finilla and Bolivar Urrutia under house arrest after the attempted coup led by Cols Ramiro Silvera and Amado Sanjur. The two leaders await trial for subversion while the others, including Torrijos, decide fate of the ruling circle. Torrijos returned from Mexico City to lead the response and vow to restore his government.

Nixon gains leverage as Viet Cong shift in peace talks

Allied diplomats say Nixon’s success against critics has pressured the Communist side to adjust its bargaining. The Viet Cong and North Vietnamese are reportedly seeking changes to present more palatable peace offers to the U.S. public as disengagement from the war proceeds.

Portable TV Causes Bedroom Fire Damaging Home

A portable television started a 6 09 a m bedroom blaze at R J Dombrowski 7506 E Granada amounting to 3500 in damage heavy smoke spread to the rest of the house Firemen also handled two other Tuesday fires one in a storage room at 6643 E Coronado and another in a dishwasher at 8455 E Vista Damages were 75 and 40 respectively Firemen assisted at multiple other incidents and traffic events with oxygen calls and accidents.

Jewell hearing continued in Scottsdale child molestation case

A preliminary hearing for Isaac T. Jewell was continued until January in Scottsdale Justice Court before Judge Harold Holcomb. Only one witness, a one year old foster child, testified before the continuance was granted at the request of prosecutor Dan Roth and defense attorney Tom Aranda. The witness said she was molested by Jewell on several occasions.

Burglars Hit Indian School Road Service Station

Burglars broke a window at the American service station on Indian School Road and stole 419 in goods and 50 in cash. A stereo, speaker, several tires, oil, and other items were taken. Police say the burglary occurred between 11 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday.

Youth arrested on pot charge after Scottsdale search

Scottsdale Police with a search warrant arrested Brooks Jones, 18, of 473 N Miller Tuesday afternoon and charged him with suspicion of possession of marijuana. Officers found two plastic bags containing marijuana at Jones residence and he, a Scottsdale High student, is to be arraigned today.

Girl Scout Troop 262 caroled at Heritage of Camelback Nursing Home and collected goods. Cub Scout Pack 265 aided Toys For Tots with a December pack meeting led by Cubmaster Larry Langely.

Coronado High School Bomb Scare Probe Expands

Scottsdale police questioned two juveniles regarding threats at Coronado High School after two bomb calls prompted evacuations at 11 40 a m Monday and a later report Tuesday. Searches found no bomb. Police planned to question two more suspects today.

British move to abolish hangman role in Parliament

In Britain a government push led by Home Secretary James Callaghan wins Commons approval 343 to 185 to abolish the hangman as Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s cabinet mulls Lords action. Albert Pierrepoint, the former hangman, 63, reflecting on the change.

Callaghan Advocates Abolition Of Hanging In Britain

United Press International reports that Jim Callaghan argues capital punishment should end, calling hanging barbaric and citing stable murder rates over five years. The debate follows Britain's five year moratorium expiring next July with a possible reversion to executions for specific murders.
