Gary Gilmore, convicted killer, was rushed from his stripped-down state prison cell to University Medical Center in a suspected drug overdose. Hospital officials described his condition as critical, later revised to good by a state prison official.
Jamaican voters gave Prime Minister Michael Manley a sweeping win with his Socialist platform and pro Cuba stance. Unofficial returns show the People's National Party securing 45 of 60 seats in the House of Representatives.
