Obituary notes Walt Disney founder of Disneyland and a major film producer. He died at St Joseph Hospital in Burbank after lung surgery and a reported tumor was found. Disney won 23 Academy Awards and inspired a global entertainment empire.
United Press International reports a nation wide chill with Livingston Montana at 3 degrees and Concord New Hampshire at zero. Florida frost threatened crops including poinsettias while the citrus industry escaped damage. Rain dampened Texas Louisiana and Arkansas as winds gusted and temperatures rose elsewhere Peaking at Point Mugu California with a two degree high.
United Press International reports at 2 p.m. Dow Jones industrial average stood at 807.40, down 1.78 with 30 stocks, while 65 stocks declined and 15 utilities slipped 0.06. Noon quotes show Alcoa at 80% and AT&T at 53% among listed movers as sales totaled 4,870,000 shares.
Phoenix officials returning from a Washington conference urged rapid action on smog control in the next legislative session. Joseph Weinstein of the Maricopa County Health Department warned that if local measures fail the federal government will intervene. He cited proven health and economic impacts of air pollution.
Robert Benjam Smith stood for trial on five counts including first degree murder in the Rose Mar Beauty School shootings. Five witnesses testifying at a closed pretrial hearing included Bonita Harris, the lone adult survivor, Drs Kerr and Schrantz, Officer Alan Bradley, and Owen Stradley. Smith was arrested Nov 12 after allegedly forcing five women and two children into a back room and firing. Victims listed include Joyce Sellers and her daughter Debra, Mary Olson, Glenda Carter, and Cara Farmer. Harris was wounded and Tamara Sellers was injured.
Janet Mae Rosenheim 36 of Casablanca Road died last night at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. Services Sunday at 3 p.m. at Messinger Mortuary conducted by Rabbi Moshe Tutnauer. Survived by husband Jerry four children Richard Lee Michael Scott Robin Esther Barbie. She was a Kiva School board member and active in the Kiva Teachers and Parents Association.
