Reports from Athens say King Constantine leads Royalist columns toward the capital and orders the generals to resign or be overthrown. The king assembles a new government in Nanassa as tensions rise and a counter revolution appears underway.
Both houses schedule caucuses this afternoon to review tax and education compromise. A key proposal would create a fourth property class covering commercial and industrial developments, currently assessed at 18 percent in the Senate and 20 percent in the House.
Scottsdale educators and school officials reported a shift toward accepting federal funds as the board unanimously authorized an application for 35 395 in federal aid for library resources and instructional materials. Superintendent John Tanner warned that budget planning awaits state actions while noting inadequate vocational facilities and courses in the district.
The city planning commission unanimously backs a new shopping center at Thomas and Hayden Rds and approves Thunderbird Industrial Park on 60 acres near Scottsdale Municipal Airport. SDC Corp. pledges over $750 000 investment and Tibshraeng Bros. Construction plans March start, pending city council final site approvals.
Drew Pearson told the Scottsdale Dinner Club that U S leadership is essential to prevent a leaderless world and possible World War II style conflict. He said Moscow warned against China’s Vietnam role and that Vietnam will extend beyond 1968 elections. Pearson criticized U S ethics, noting three standards in Congress and cited Powell Dodd and Rivers as examples.
The U S Weather Bureau says the rain in the Valley continues with the storm covering much of Arizona likely to persist for another day. Rain reports include Scottsdale .08 inches the Salt River Project Field Office .05 inches the Arizona Canal .05 inches Sky Harbor .11 inches and Tempe .19 inches. Expect cloudy skies with scattered showers tonight and tomorrow and possible snow flurries on nearby mountains. Highs near 60 today and 52 tomorrow. lows around 32 tonight.
Mr and Mrs Fowler McCormick present Scottsdale with a deed to 100 acres on N Scottsdale Rd to be developed as a city park. The property on both sides of Scottsdale Rd south of Indian Bend Rd is valued over 800 000. Mayor Bud Tims and City Manager Bill Donaldson accepted the gift during ceremonies at the McCormick South Ranch.
Scottsdale and Indian Bend Roads will host the new McCormick Park with 70 acres of children’s play areas riding trails a lake and a steam railroad funded by Mrs. McCormick’s son Guy Stillman The remaining 30 acres will hold a community center a branch library an outdoor theater and a museum The $800 000 gift includes a 15 room house to become an old West artifacts museum A parks construction crew will be approved to develop the park over several years The model railroad will cross trails and a lake bridge near an arboretum with parking for access from both roads
Ranier Construction Co of Phoenix submitted the low bid of 209 367 for a 4 400 square foot administration building and a 20 000 square foot two story hangar at Scottsdale Municipal Airport. Other bids ranged up to 377 780 with Scottsdale Properties Inc accepting bids. The project will be leased to the city via a nonprofit and then to Bob Wachs of Scottsdale Aviation Co. The 200 acre site was donated by the Seventh Day Adventist Church and developed with federal aid.
