California car pool under state order faces ban on shared costs
Garlene Zappitelli, citing President Ford, defends a noncommercial car pool using a 12 passeng er van for TRW workers between Fountain Valley and Redondo Beach. The California Public Utilities Commission weighs if the service is a car pool or a bus line and ordered a cease and desist to stop sharing gasoline expenses, amid a $500 fine threat and restitution claim by Southern California Commuter Bus Service Inc. Eight riders testified they were not commercially solicited. The case may shape the future of car pool movements and is defended with help from the Center for Law in the Public Interest.
