President Nixon is expected to sign a three year tax cut package sent by Congress. The measure includes relief for certain workers and families, a 7 percent credit for machinery, export income deferral, and repeals of auto and truck taxes, with a limited $1 per tax to fund campaigns allowed only for 1976 elections.
Longshore President Harry Bridges urged 15 000 ILWU members to tighten belts and be ready to resume the 100 day dock strike on Jan 1 unless a broader unity with the ILA occurs. He described ongoing talks in San Francisco and noted rejection of PMA terms unless a 15 cent pay hike and resolution of container and steady man issues are met.
The Pay Board tentatively approved an 11 500 railroad signalmen contract delivering a 46 percent pay and benefit increase over 42 months. It endorses more than 25 percent raises for 1970 and 1971 and nearly 20 percent in 1972 and early 1973, while keeping the right to reexamine future increases before they take effect.
Firefighters responded to a 4 14 a m call at Windmill Dinner Theater 10349 N Scottsdale Rd to inspect smoke from the roof. Officials attributed possible furnace motor burnout. Crews cleared the smoke and inspected the furnace with no damage reported. Sierra National Corp reported a $30 loss at 7 52 p m Thursday when smoke filled an apartment at 7110 E Continental.
Gunmen ambushed and killed Sgt. Kenneth Smyth of the Ulster Defense Regiment as he stopped a car near the Ireland Northern Ireland border. The attack followed Londonderry rioting with at least 12 wounded, part of a broader wave of Ulster violence reaching 156 deaths this year. A gunman later searched Smyth's grandparents' home. eight gunmen and several soldiers were reported wounded in Bogside clashes.
John W. Gardner, chair of Common Cause, will speak at Arizona State University in the Memorial Union Arizona Room at 8 p.m. The talk covers Common Cause goals and progress to curb political campaign spending and contributions at the national level. Gardner, former HEW secretary and Urban Coalition chair, appears publicly free of charge.
Gen. Yitzhak Rabin, Israeli ambassador to the United States and Six Day War hero, will make his first Valley appearance at the Ambassadorial Dinner Dance at Mountain Shadows. Rabin will present the Shalom Award to Phoenician Sam Smith for decades of work with Israeli bonds campaigns and Phoenix Jewish community activities. Rabin took his post in February 1968 after serving as IDF chief of staff.
About 30 women, wives of 150 chemical workers on strike since October 8, picketed around Apache Powder Co and on Main Street. They entered businesses to explain the dispute as the company hires non union workers to replace striking employees who rejected a 5.5 percent wage rise.
The Arizona Corporation Commission shifted hearings from Phoenix to Tucson so residents could comment on Mountain Bell's proposed rate increase. The company seeks to eliminate suburban surcharges in Tucson and Phoenix if approved, with new monthly rates quoted as 9.55 dollars in Phoenix and 8.80 in Tucson for a one party line.
