Wintry weather hits Great Lakes to New England with heavy snow

A powerful cold front and two storms bring heavy snow and mixed precipitation. Wisconsin Minnesota and Michigan report deep snow. New York and New England face travel warnings. Southern Florida stays warm while Pacific Northwest sees light rain and snow. Mason City Iowa records a foot of snow. Minneapolis St Paul Duluth report eight inches plus.

Obituary for Mrs Emma L Pruitt 46 Scottsdale resident

Services for Mrs Emma L Pruitt 46 were held at Green Acres Mortuary with burial in Green Acres Memorial Gardens. She died Saturday in a local nursing home after moving from Colorado Springs to Scottsdale in 1962. Survivors include her husband Vincent A Pruitt two sons James and John a daughter Peggy Jean and two sisters living out of state.

Lee Burris 88 died Saturday at home in Kansas City Kansas. A retired warehouseman, he moved to the Valley nine years ago. Survivors include three daughters Mrs. Frank Bohac Phoenix Mrs. Richard Hamilton Tempe and Mrs. Enoch Manis Kansas City a son Jesse Raymond Burris Salem Arkansas five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Frigid Air Grips Arizona With Light Showers and Cold Highs

A trough moved from northwest to southeast across Arizona bringing a few light showers and snow flurries. Scottsdale reported .02 inches of rain, Flagstaff Prescott Payson and Douglas saw traces, Phoenix had .01. Highs ranged from 65 at Buckeye to 40 at Grand Canyon with mornings as low as 13 at Flagstaff.

Santa grounding delays Omaha christmas shop opening

In Omaha Nebraska Santa was to officially open the downtown Christmas shopping season but 10% inches of snow grounded his helicopter causing a delay. The mix up with traditional travel meant the event could not proceed as planned.

Six hurt in four weekend Scottsdale auto crashes

Over the weekend six people were injured in four Scottsdale area car accidents. At 10 15 p m Saturday John Vogler 24 of 808 N 82nd St rear ended by William Baker 26 of 2638 N 71st Pl Vogler and passenger Diane Shufford 23 of 8515 E Montebello were treated and released. Baker cited for speed not reasonable and prudent and failure to control.

Two Canadians Sought in Slaying at Luke AFB Case

Two Canadians Dennis Leon Martel and Keith Roland Olsen are sought in the slaying of Luke AFB Sgt Lawrence Broughall. Murder warrants to be issued. authorities say more suspects may be named. Broughall found in a 140-foot mine shaft west of Black Canyon City after a robbery spree tied to three suspects.

Health certificate fee raised to 2.50 by county health dept

The Maricopa County Health Department hiked the health certificate fee from 2 to 2.50 to cover higher x ray processing costs. The board of supervisors approved the increase and also authorized charges for health certificates for teachers and for vaccinations. A 2 fee for food handler schools was adopted, with exemptions for medical indigents or disease control programs.

Kenya election trims cabinet as incumbents fall

In Kenya's first general election in nine years only 35 percent of incumbents kept seats in Parliament. President Jomo Kenyatta saw five of twenty cabinet ministers and thirteen of thirty junior ministers lose their bids. Grace Onyango became Kenya's first woman MP, defeating five men. The vote underscored tribal tensions between Kikuyu and Luo, with opposition barred.

Fire damages Sears store and a Ford in two blasts

A Saturday blaze caused 400 dollars in damage to the new Sears store in the Los Arcos Mall. Firemen arrived after the fire started in a women’s restroom and could not determine the cause. A second fire on Sunday did 60 dollars of damage to a 1966 Ford Galaxy at 4537 North 75th Way caused by a shorted wire, firemen said.

Wallet taken in strongarm robbery in Los Angeles

John Parker 38 reported his billfold stolen early Sunday in a strongarm robbery. He described two suspects, aged 23 to 24, about six feet tall with blond and black hair, wearing T shirts. Separately in Scottsdale, two paper boys were robbed by teens in two incidents. Barry McDonough 15 said three youths robbed him of about $7 near E Osborn. Police described the suspects as 12 to 14 years old in red plaid shirt green slacks blue jeans and blue jacket. In another incident Stuart Maxon 13 had $1 taken by two youths about 7:20 p m at 82nd St and Hazelwood. Each suspect was about 16 and five feet 11 inches tall. one wore a brown jacket and green pants while the other had light brown hair and wore dark clothing.

Trial Ordered for Local Youth in Stolen Car Case

Steven Keeler 18 of Scottsdale bound over to Maricopa County Superior Court on a charge of receiving stolen goods. His preliminary hearing was held in Scottsdale Justice Court last week. He is accused in theft of several cars last month.
