Aide says Haldeman knew of gap in tapes
UPI reports testimony that Haldeman learned about the erased 18 minute Nixon tape before it was disclosed. Talks fail to resume in Middle East cease fire talks
U N officials in Cairo said Finnish Maj Gen Ensio Siilasvuo failed to renew talks between Israel and Egypt over the cease fire. Kissinger’s Geneva conference tour next week was cited as crucial. Egypt demanded preconditions, including Israel withdrawing from 625 square miles of seized territory before Geneva talks. Israel rejected preconditions and urged no requirement for a broad peace conference. Bush expressed cautious optimism that Israeli and Egyptian aims could still align for peace.
