The Scottsdale School District will resume a remedial reading program this year after a one year suspension. Twelve special reading teachers will instruct readers needing help in fourth through sixth grades across sixteen district elementary schools.
A Scottsdale man captured a naked intruder in his residence at 7302 E Bonita then held him at gunpoint until police arrived. The 17 year old burglar admitted breaking into the Crate house to targets two teen girls and said he drank a quart of wine the night of the break in. He is on probation for child molestation and was to be questioned by Phoenix police about a string of 14 burglaries and assaults in the area.
A federal court decision was pending in the Pinetop case involving three Jehovah’s Witness youths who refused to stand for the National Anthem and were expelled from school. Their families argue religious persecution and seek readmission, with counsel Victor Blackwell asserting the anthem is not a secular requirement.
Mohave school will extend summer break by six days due to delays in remodeling three single family homes into temporary classrooms. Kindergartners and first graders report September 9 for the first day, while the rest of the district’s 16 000 elementary students return on Tuesday.
Scottsdale officials study paying petition volunteers to gather signatures for the east side annexation. The Were for Scottsdale committee says few volunteers slow a 27 square mile effort, proposing $1.25 hourly or $1 per signature with a $4,500 cost to finish by Oct 1.

Congress and President Kennedy intervened to avert a nationwide rail strike by authorizing binding arbitration on firemen jobs and train crew composition. A seven member board will decide within 90 days, keeping services running for at least six months with no strikes or lockouts during the panel’s two year window.

Residents say miners take care of their own as the 52 year old man has been entombed for 16 days with no contact for 9 days, while efforts to recover him persist despite official hesitations.
Four city council members and officials met with the We're for Scottsdale annexation group then held a closed boards and commissions session at city hall. Assistant City Manager Tom Cochran said personnel matters were discussed but no official action was taken.
