Brandt and Ulbricht Clash as Rival German Leaders
Berlin reports compare Willy Brandt and Walter Ulbricht, two exiled Germans now leaders of West Berlin and East Germany. Brandt, 47, enjoys wide popular support among 2.2 million West Berliners, while Ulbricht, 69, wields power over 16 million East Germans with ruthlessness. The two spar over communism amid the Berlin crisis, with Brandt denouncing Ulbricht as a “Hitler Ulbricht” and Ulbricht retorting “Slave Trader Brandt.” Brandt, born Herbert Frahm in 1913, fled Germany in 1933, later becoming a Norwegian citizen before returning to politics in Berlin.
