West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, 85, walked near the sealed Berlin border during an eight hour visit. He inspected the border between East and West Berlin while a Communist water cannon loomed from East Berlin.
Scottsdale three high schools anticipate a combined enrollment of 4225 by opening day September 5. Arcadia will host about 1525 students, Scottsdale around 1500 to 1550, and Coronado 1150 to 1200 as the district prepares for its first year at Coronado. Registration runs daily with tailored bookstore hours.
President Kennedy warned of difficult weeks ahead yet pledged U S resolve to maintain West Berlin freedom. He cited Lyndon Johnsons report on the 2 day mission to West Germany and the Berlin border area as remarkably successful and important. Johnson meetings with Adenauer and Brandt were described as useful and fruitful.
Arizona officials including Governor Paul Fannin and Highway Patrol Superintendent Greg Hathaway discussed measures to reduce Labor Day traffic carnage. Civil Air Patrol volunteers will fly as observers over highways during the weekend to aid in prevention.
Scottsdale moves to annex Eastside area of 22 000 people nine square miles valued at 21 million dollars encircling Motorola’s Hayden McDowell plant which will be deleted from the annexation action. City officials expect sewer needs later and note Frontier Town Frontier Lanes Papago Bowl and Earl’s Shoppers Fair will join the city.
Tonight Scottsdale faces annexation that could tie Mesa as the state’s third largest city with about 36,000 residents each. Mesa lists 36,600, while Scottsdale counts 14,000 and expected 22,000 from annexation to reach roughly 36,000. Scottsdale would overtake Yuma at 24,000.
A 300-man posse says it arrested a man believed to be one of three gunmen in the deputy sheriff’s killing. The suspect, described as well built with a dark complexion, was flushed from a farm site after an extensive manhunt in Wisconsin Dells.
Adlai E. Stevenson urged the United Nations General Assembly to ignore Moscow’s demand for liquidation of foreign military bases. He called the Soviet denunciation shameless given its own conquering armies in Eastern Europe. Soviet Ambassador Morozov objected, accusing Stevenson of distracting the assembly and world opinion from the issues at hand.
Freeholders approved a new Scottsdale city charter last night after rejecting 10 of 12 proposed revisions from the city council. The final draft will be signed Thursday night and sent for legal publication before a citizen vote in late October. The charter designates Scottsdale as a city, sets simultaneous council and mayor elections, lowers residence requirements, fixes salaries, mandates open meetings, removes mandatory voting, and adds a personal interest clause.
City Manager Bob McNutt praised Phoenix City Council for endorsing a 4.6 million flood control levee across Indian Bend Wash. The project hinges on 2.4 million in federal funds and 2.2 million from Maricopa County taxpayers, about 65 percent of whom live in Phoenix. The levee would redirect drainage southeast into Evergreen Wasteway near Mesa, enabling Scottsdale land development and tax gains for county and state.
Mayor Mort E. Kimsey and his wife depart by train for Seattle to attend the American Municipal League conference from August 26 to 30. Councilman John Marron will join as city delegate. the couple plans a Pacific Coast vacation after the convention before returning to Scottsdale.
Two county personnel staffers resigned after County Personnel Director John P. Burke of Scottsdale was fired by a 2-1 county board vote. Burke claimed political pressure while Miller cited Burke’s overreaching actions in firing Gordon Allison.
President Kennedy urged the Soviet Union to affirm renewed U S efforts toward a treaty banning nuclear testing. Arthur Dean, head of the U S delegation, will return to Geneva for further negotiations, with Kennedy endorsing the mission and stressing the treaty’s global importance.
In Georgetown British Guiana the PPP led by Dr Cheddi Jagan won a majority of 19 seats in the 35 seat colonial legislature as returns from most districts showed 19 for the PPP 9 for the PNC and 2 for the Conservative United Force.
