24 year old Californian sailor David Meigs arrived in Pago Pago after 130 days at sea in the trimaran Extended Adolescence. Illness and storms forced him to turn back about 1400 miles north. he lost around 25 pounds but was declared hale by doctors after landing. He subsisted mainly on fish including a 70 pound tuna.
Officials from Arizona California Nevada Colorado Utah Wyoming and New Mexico agreed to cooperate on diverting water from less arid regions into the Colorado River and to end disputes over river water. The plan aims to ease the Southwest drought by tapping external sources.
The Senate Appropriations Committee approved 8.8 million in reclamation and flood control funding for Arizona. The largest share, 4.4 million, targets the Colorado river front levee system along the Arizona California border. Other grants include 2.5 million for Alamo Reservoir, 1.0 million for the Tucson diversion channel, and 270 thousand for Painted Rock Reservoir on the Gila River.
The Arizona Highway Patrol reports three deaths in separate Friday night crashes. Hilton Dunlap, 38, of Scottsdale died when his motorcycle left U S 60 north of Globe and fell 11 feet into a canyon. Richard Burdette Randall, 20, of Mesa died in a one vehicle crash on State Route 87 north of Payson after his car left the road and overturned 22 times and caught fire. A third man, initially identified as a California resident, died in a head on collision on U S 80 east of Yuma. Injured were Robert J. Estus, 48, Las Vegas, and J B Helms, 44, Tacna.
Matt H Murphy Jr imperial counsel of the United Klans of America was killed when his convertible collided with a tank truck near Tuscaloosa. His death may delay the Wilkins nightrider murder trial in Greensboro and a funeral service is planned in Birmingham with a Tuscaloosa delegation.
Gov. Sam Goddard ordered the Arizona Highway Commission to probe alleged irregular and perhaps illegal practices in the state driver license branch. A report is requested by September 1, with Commission Chairman Arthur Black noting potential legal ramifications and seeking an immediate investigation by the attorney general's office.
President Johnson unveils a broad 17 month study by a 19 member panel to find significant cures for rising crime. Attorney General Katzenbach says hearings may be held nationwide with seven working groups and a September 8 9 kickoff. James Vorenberg named executive secretary as the project begins.
State police cordoned off Camp Breckinridge after hundreds of youths at the Job Corps center rioted for hours. Ten were injured as factions clashed near the cafeteria and security HQ. Center staff and about 100 students fled. Dr. Robert MacVicar of Southern Illinois University called it a troubled but essential program. Authorities cited multiple causes including dormitory, food and facility complaints with racial overtones noted by officials.
