Goldwater backs Social Security while opposing Medicare

Senator Barry Goldwater endorsed a bill raising Social Security cash benefits by five percent for about 20 million people, while opposing the administration's Medicare proposal for the aged. He warned against financing hospitalization and nursing care through higher Social Security taxes, saying it would burden and bankrupt the system. The dispute sets the arena for a vote on health care for 18 million Americans 65 and older as the King Anderson bill is linked to Social Security. Debate to begin August 31 after Congress returns from the Democratic convention recess.
