Senate Uses Tactic To Speed Bus Desegregation Bill
The Senate moved to shortcut House desegregation busing legislation amid a strong divide. Senator James B. Allen sought to blunt a liberal filibuster as the bill, passed 282 to 102 in the House, heads to the Senate for its toughest test. The measure would require courts to try nonbusing methods first and limit cross town student placement, with a Green amendment allowing court-ordered desegregation orders to be reopened or terminated.
