William F. Miller told state GOP chairmen that weak city organization hurt the 1960 GOP race and said Barry Goldwater will not suffer the same fate. He urged unity saying the party must strengthen its structure at every level to avoid collapse.
National Chairman Dean Burch to brief reporters as closed sessions outline the 1964 campaign finance topics. Miller predicts real Republican unity and discusses coordination between the national ticket and candidates to defeat Goldwater and supporters in November.
Sen. J. William Fulbright scorned Barry Goldwater’s conservative program calling it a mix of risky ventures abroad and inaction at home. As Foreign Relations Committee chairman he warned it would spark upheaval in the nation and world. He urged voters to defeat Goldwater in November.

It took 90 minutes to capture the dog who seemed to recognize home.
Washington reports say U S air strikes against North Vietnam were limited to conventional ordnance and that nuclear weapons were ruled out by orders to the 7th Fleet. Goldwater disputed implied calls for nuclear use during his Hershey press conference.
FAA shakeup ordered after a one in a million error. A Fresno? no, a private plane crashed into Mt. San Gorgonio near San Bernardino after air traffic control mistook it for another aircraft. The victims were R. C. Corder, Curtis Turrill, and Ray Snodgrass. Talks of radar license tags and position reports were announced.
In Paterson New Jersey peace returned to the 4th Ward after three nights of clashes between youths and police. Civil rights leaders in sound cars urged residents to stay calm while Mayor Graves kept extra officers on standby. Elizabeth also reported no riots Friday night despite minor bottle-throwing incidents earlier in the week.

Igor Verucshtis and Boris Midney of the Bolshoi troupe vanished from a Tokyo hotel after saying they did not want to return to the Soviet Union. They reportedly contacted the U S Embassy and requested help, with Tokyo press noting possible asylum implications. The embassy confirmed contact and humanitarian interest. Police checked for them, and Japanese authorities said a Russian Embassy request asked for a search.
Governors of five Southern states led by Louisiana's John J. McKeithen held a several hour closed door session in New Orleans to discuss mutual problems ahead of the national election. Participants included Paul Johnson of Mississippi Orval Faubus of Arkansas George Wallace of Alabama and Farris Bryant of Florida. Bryant said a wide range of subjects were discussed. The group released a brief statement noting the meeting was for exchanging views on handling mutual concerns and that they may meet again.
