Pathet Lao troops fired near two U S Embassy staff members during a visit to a Pathet Lao held warehouse five miles outside Vientiane and briefly detained them before release after names were taken. Rosemary Conway left Laos after two months' detention on spying claims.
The United States vetoed both North and South Vietnam bids for U N membership in protest over South Korea's exclusion. Moynihan cast rapid vetoes as the Security Council favored Hanoi and Saigon 13 to 1 with Costa Rica abstaining. The move drew charges of Cold War tactics and selective universality from several nations and observers.
First Lady Betty Ford drew both praise and sharp criticism after saying premarital sex might lower divorce rates and that abortion was a great decision. Religious leaders voiced shock while supporters applauded her openness as Susan Ford denied any affairs.
