Shultz blames consumer demand for meat shortage scare
Treasury Secretary George P. Shultz says there is no meat shortage, only demand from shoppers. He warns cattle raisers delaying beef may suffer when the Sept. 12 price freeze lifts if supplies surge. Automakers eyed for price hike requests under Phase IV, possibly up to 150 dollars. Wheat futures hit records, and Hershey Foods cites cocoa and almond price jumps. Pork supplies rise 2 percent as beef declines. Ft. Ord Army mess halls will stop selling beef. Buffalo meat gains popularity in Lynwood markets.
