Renewed rioting erupted in a Miami Negro neighborhood with about 20 youths throwing rocks at cars along 62nd Street in Liberty City. Police barricaded the area, reinforcements moved in, and nearly 100 arrests were reported with 13 injured as merchants boarded up fronts amid ongoing fear.
The Scottsdale Boys Band returns from a Southwest tour to play two free summer concerts. On Saturday at 8 p.m. Eldorado Park at 76th St and Oak hosts the show. Sunday at 8 p.m. the band performs at the Community Center Park at 2nd St and Rail Park Plaza.
Henry Grier a 40 year old AC Transit driver testified he saw Huey Newton fire at two Oakland police officers during the dawn October 28 incident. Grier identified Newton as the civilian shooter and described the gun battle that left Patrolman John Frey dead and Patrolman Herbert Heanes wounded.
Police report a color television set and a stereo were stolen Wednesday from Ludwig Stohl at 5634 E Edgemont in Scottsdale. A rear window was broken to gain entry. the loss is estimated at about 860 dollars.
Richard M. Nixon emerged as the Republican presidential nominee after a hard campaign against Nelson Rockefeller and Ronald Reagan. He expressed calm confidence about the tough election ahead and planned planning conferences near San Diego to map strategy and ensure law and order. He then prepared for a rapid schedule of post convention travel and rallies to unify the party.
The Nixon campaign will focus on pivotal industrial states and hostile territory in a new second bid. He seeks GOP unity with backing from Reagan and Rockefeller while targeting swing voters and possible flying city tours to mend wounds from the convention.
A six year old Scottsdale girl Elen Cusacks was struck by a car while riding a bicycle at Oak and 76th Streets. She was treated for minor injuries at a private physician's office. The driver, seventeen year old Mary Vongnechten, was not hurt. Police said she was southbound on 76th Street when the collision occurred. No citations were issued.
Ronald Reagan kept his options open after his first bid for the Republican nomination. He admitted he wanted the nomination while saying he would return to being California governor if not chosen. He told reporters the party backing and his supporters would push him to try again.
Farm workers and Friends of Farm Workers Action Committee picketed Fry’s Food Store in E Hayden Plaza for three hours urging California grape boycotts. The national action targets California grape producers over union negotiations with workers, with about 3000 workers striking and plans to spread protests to Valley stores.
A slip of the drill caused a 220 volt line strike during a TV install at 11229 N 68th St. The workman was unharmed and the fire was quickly put out. A stove short in a control box caused a $40 fire at 1302 N 71st St. Firefighters cut the blaze and advised repair. Illegal burning near Hayden and 13020 N led responders to a short city bin fire behind Circle K at Granite Reef and McDonald. flames were doused with no damage reported.

Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, recovering from a sixth heart attack, said he was delighted by Richard Nixon s nomination as the Republican standard bearer. Doctors at Walter Reed said his condition remained stable with no infection, while noting the risk of another heart attack remains unpredictable. In Seoul, South Korean troops killed two Communist infiltrators along the DMZ.
