The Labor Department reports a 1.2 percent climb in the wholesale price index, the largest since April and a sign that inflation may regain momentum. Analysts note food costs drive the gain while July figures reinforce expectations of temporary spike and eventual moderation.
The city asserts its amortization ordinance and ban on new billboards are valid police powers. Eller Outdoor Advertising of Arizona sues, claiming unconstitutionality and loss of a $500000, 12 billboard business with a 40 year life. Phoenix attorney Guy Gelbron represents Eller and SAM in parallel actions.
City council members indicated general agreement with proposed policies and regulations for the Scottsdale Center for the Arts set to open mid October. Formal action will be needed on regulations rate schedules and operations.
The Maricopa County Health Planning Council will hold a public hearing in Scottsdale on the proposal by North Scottsdale Associates for a 240 bed hospital at Pima Road and Shea Boulevard. The plan, reviewed since last year, could finish by 1982 if approved.
In Scottsdale area, 1,659 residents receive welfare with 164 in a affluent zone near Mockingbird Lane and Lincoln Drive. DES data show 28 general assistance, 415 Aid to Dependent Children, and 1,216 food stamps. Social workers report a new poor, many former middle class, facing unemployment and depleted savings.
A 64 year old Scottsdale woman, silent on identity, struggles after her husband’s heart attack left them living on an $80 monthly Social Security check. They were denied DES aid because assets exceed roughly $1,200 due to burial insurance and a gravesite plot.
A federal grand jury in New Orleans indicted 22 men and a grain company for alleged crooked grain export dealings. Indictments cite more than $1 million in grain stolen over a four year span from June 1971, barge loading included.
White House spokesman Ron Nessen said President Ford will not interfere with the CIA and other agencies. He emphasized that intelligence agencies including the NSA have vital national security responsibilities and the president will not preclude them from carrying out their legitimate work.
