The U S unemployment rate fell to 6.9 percent in July as the civilian labor force shrank by about 340 000 with most loss among teenagers. Total employment stood at 90.6 million, little changed from June, while the number of unemployed dropped to 6.7 million.
The Valley endures a sweltering summer with near record June and July temperatures and humidity levels about one percent higher than last year. Weather experts say mositure arrived early and may not indicate a long term trend, with residents forced to seek air conditioned relief.

Rockwell International confirmed that chairman Wilard F. Rockwell Jr and general counsel John J. Rescia sold significant stock on June 20, ten days before President Carter canceled production of the B1 bomber. Rockwell disclosed 36,200 shares at 36 per share totaling 1.3 million and 2,000 shares at about 36.4 to 36.5 per share totaling 72,700.
Scottsdale vice Mayor Billie Gentry urges a joint Phoenix Scottsdale meeting and ASU president to resolve funding for Transit Line 22 serving ASU. Tempe has dropped subsidizing the route while Scottsdale estimates about 100 Scottsdale and 160 Phoenix students ride it.
The forecast calls for continued sunshine and extreme heat through today and Saturday with highs ranging from 105 to 110 degrees. Overnight lows will stay in the mid 80s and today’s noon reading reached 107 with humidity at 16 percent.
