Yank pilots on way home from Laos release

Three American pilots Capt. Joe V. Carpenter Maj. Fred Thompson and Maj. James F. Low were released by North Vietnam and arrived in Vientiane with pacifists Stewart Meecham Ann Scheer and Vernon Grizzard aboard an International Commission plane. U.S. officials planned to help them return to the United States via commercial flights amid a prior North Vietnamese critique over earlier prisoner transfers.

Dr Kruglick backs Humphrey in 1968 presidential race

Arizona Democratic national committeeman Dr John Kruglick endorsed Vice President Hubert Humphrey for the party nomination. Kruglick, a national convention delegate, praised Humphrey as uniquely understanding American government and making a great contribution. He said he would support Sen Eugene McCarthy if McCarthy won the nomination.

Missing Cessna 150 Sparks Expanded Air Search

Emergency teams expanded the search from San Diego to Yuma for Cessna 150 flown by Roger Dill of Tucson with his wife Margaret aboard. Civil Air Patrol and sheriff units scoured five days of leads while CAP considered a flight over the Mexican border to locate the private plane.

Nine-Year Attendance Awards Earned by Sertoma Members

At a Scottsdale Sertoma Club meeting at the Ra Massa Inn Emil Salmi and J R Sanderson received nine year attendance awards. Earl Passwater club president noted a total of 19 awards were given including a seven year award to Orrie Scott.

Birth rate in slump signals shifting family trends

The U S Census Bureau reports 1967 birth rate fell to the lowest in U S history with fewer than 18 births per 1000 people. Death rate eased from 9.5 in 1966 to 9.4 per 1000, yet overall population growth remained below postwar levels due to widespread planning and delayed childbearing.

Obituary Notes for William K. Braasch of Scottsdale

William K. Braasch, 78, of 6631 E Barll Dr, died Thursday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. A former Evanston, Illinois resident, born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, he was an author and lecturer on salesmanship. Survived by wife Clara, daughter Charlotte Dunham of Tucson, two other daughters out of state, and six grandchildren. Cremation at Green Acres Mortuary with no service.

Alitalia DC8 Crashes Near Milan Airport

A Alitalia DC8 with 98 aboard crashed in a violent thunderstorm while approaching Milan Malpensa. About 30 survived and 68 were killed. 62 passengers were Italian and others of mixed nationalities. Rescue hindered by the storm near Oiraone de Vergiate, north of the airport.

20-30 Club Wins National Honor at 47th Convention
