Verde River Flow To Speed Up This Weekend

The Verde River flow will nearly double this weekend as Salt River Project shores up Saguaro Lake to keep it full for boaters and fishermen. Current flow Monday is expected around 2000 cubic feet per second versus 1375 this morning.

Riddel Sworn In As Superior Court Judge In Phoenix

Marilyn Riddel was sworn in today as a Superior Court judge in the Phoenix county auditorium before about 350 spectators. State Supreme Court Justice Lorna Lockwood administered the oath. Harold Tickers helped her. Riddel fills the vacancy created by the death of Judge Charles Rowan. The Arizona Federation of Business and Professional Women presented a 125 year old Bible for the ceremony.

Democrats for Integrity face bid to seize county committee

In Phoenix the Democrats for Integrity led by Paul Rademacher challenged county chair John Carney. Petitions with 700 precinct committeemen seek a county convention this month to elect new officers. Critics warned of a $400 convention cost while Carney studies the petition for validity. Ruth McGregor opposed Carney but supported his election. Judy Hardes refused the petition.

Tobacco and liquor groups plan strategy meeting

Representatives from the tobacco and liquor industries will meet Saturday to decide how to respond to the city tax. STOP association chairman Jerry Roseland says the group is studying the court ruling dismissing the suit and may pursue a new lawsuit or appeal. He notes the tax failed to meet revenue projections and has hurt city merchants.

U.S. and North Vietnamese Clash Near DMZ Amid Rescue

American infantrymen clashed with North Vietnamese forces along the DMZ while attempting to rescue crewmen of a downed U S hospital helicopter. About 2 650 U S troops left Vietnam as part of Nixon’s withdrawal plan, totaling over 10 000 since withdrawals began. Air strikes hit bunkers and a mortar site west of Con Thien as U S B 52s dropped 270 tons of bombs in three raids.

Stolen Watch Tied to Scottsdale Home Absent Owner

Police report a $700 watch missing from a dresser during the homeowner's absence in Scottsdale. C. F. Rhoades, born 909 E08, said he last saw the watch on the dresser before leaving July 13 and returning July 24. No forced entry observed. inscription reads To Leslie C. Hardy from members of the Arizona State Senate. Hardy was Rhoades' father in law and former Arizona Legislature attorney.

Obituary for Janet C. Magis 33 of Scottsdale

Janet C. Magis 33 of 6462 E. Cypress Scottsdale died Tuesday in Phoenix. A Pennsylvania native she moved to Scottsdale in 1963 from Pittsburgh where she worked as a programmer for Pittsburgh Plate Glass. Survivors include husband William son Mark two daughters Wendy Jo and Pamela Lynn parents Edward and Mrs McClure and a brother out of state. Services Saturday at 10 a.m. Green Acres Mortuary burial at Green Acres Cemetery. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Dow Jones Averages End Higher With Broad Gains

The Dow Jones industrials rise 11.12 to 826.59 as railroads gain 3.43 to 199.31 and utilities add 0.58 to 117.62. The overall 65 stocks index advances 3.74 to 280.66 while 15.07 million shares change hands, up from 14.16 million yesterday.

Broad air pollution fight urged in Arizona plan

The Arizona Air Pollut ion Advisory Council will urge the federal government to form a full state Air Pollution Control District rather than a nine-county district. Federal officials suggested nine counties. the council argues pollution risk exists across all 14 counties including Greenlee Cochise Graham Gila Santa Cruz Pima Pinal Maricopa and Yavapai.
