The team attempted a shutdown method that failed three times. Heavy metal rams were closed at the wellhead late this morning, then a four on three part assembly a giant stopper was clamped on top of the apparatus.
A 60 mile long oil slick near the Keys and the continental reef system was breaking up as Coast Guard crews said wave action currents and wind could dissipate the spill by day’s end. Coast Guard spokesman Dade Tait noted the efforts were progressing with the spill weakening under natural forces.
Lt Gen Dennis P McAuliffe says the 10,000 strong force in the Canal Zone is prepared to meet any threat to the waterway and is the best prepared since the 1964 riots that left 23 dead. In Bangkok reports the Hanoi rally in Ba Dinh Square featured Le Duan Truong Chinh and Pham Hung. Vietnamese papers issued color supplements praising successes since 1975 and reunification, with calls for building a stable economy and fighting poverty nationwide.
