In a pre dawn crime wave two armed men seized $18 000 from Park n Shop and kidnapped seven people including store workers and newspaper delivery men. The suspects fled after forcing entry and tying victims. no injuries reported and no immediate leads.
UPI reports Senator Thomas J. Dodd of Connecticut, an eight year veteran, faces charges of misconduct in relations with West German lobbyist Julius Klein. Public hearings will probe the accusations, with Dodd, accusers, and Klein slated to testify. IRS also probes Dodd’s finances.
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller spurns an active role for former GOP vice presidential candidate William E. Miller in his gubernatorial campaign. Earlier Jackie Robinson warned he might quit if Miller joined the team, and Rockefeller later said the offer was misinterpreted while leaving open passive support from Miller or others.
The University of Arizona was removed from the AAUP censure list after revising its tenure and academic freedom rules and issuing a statement absolving Prof. Alan Macewan of incompetence allegations. The AAUP praised the new rules as a model, though the campus AAUP chapter urged remaining on censure due to lingering tensions.
UPI reports Washington officials weighing a possible transition in China amid Mao Tse Tungs five month absence. They caution against expecting quick shifts, noting internal over external policy changes may occur first and that leadership uncertainty could influence future U S policy and China Russia relations.
Eight persons were killed and seven children injured in a two car crash near Elsie Oregon on Highway 26. Mr and Mrs pa Anderson of Vernonia were among the dead. Six victims in one car remain unidentified.
Israeli commandos entered Jordan early today and raided two villages suspected of aiding Arab attackers against Israel. The villages were evacuated and burned. houses damaged. No Jordanian civilians were injured but three Israeli commandos suffered minor injuries. No casualties reported for the Arab group El Fatah.
Two Scottsdale High School pupils Deborah Alvord and Robert Curtis are nominated for the National Council of Teachers of English Achieve ment Awards Program. The award honors high school writing and literary awareness and winners are forwarded to U.S. college and university directors for potential scholarship support.
The City of Scottsdale Arizona awarded the sewer improvement contract for streets and alleys between Camelback and Chaparral from 82nd Street to Granite Reef Road to J H Welsh and Son Contracting Co. The council also authorized Improvement Bonds under ARS Titles and will levy annual installments of 26 dollars or more. Interest on bonds set at 4 percent.
The Scottsdale City Council will publicly open proposals on the 5th for sewer line upgrades and street improvements between Oak Street and Miller Road including alleys and sidewalks from Stottsdale Road to 76th Street. The city confirms bids will be publicly declared and evaluated by the council.
