Militant leftist students from Zengakuren clash with police in central Tokyo as they demand U.S. return of Okinawa. Riot police use tear gas, water cannons, and shields, with rioters throwing rocks, bottles, and debris near Ginza districts and a U.S. compound.
Egypt accused Israel of opening tank and small arms fire along the Suez Canal and in the Jordan River Valley. Arab commandos near the Syrian border reportedly killed one Israeli and wounded several. Cairo urged UN action, while U.N. observers blamed Egypt for starting most canal clashes. The Israeli cabinet met to consider responses amid regional turmoil.
Deputy Attorney General Richard Kleindienst denied proposing detention camps for student demonstrators after Atlantic Monthly quoted him on rounding up protesters. The Justice Department called the quote inaccurate and said there was no discussion of such camps.
A 20 year old Tempe youth Gordon Loomis was involved in a car motorcycle crash at Cortez and Scottsdale Roads. Loomis suffered a broken wrist and was listed in satisfactory condition at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. He was cited for crossing a double center line. Another crash on Shea Boulevard injured two Phoenix men James Meeks and Leonard Edwards with Meeks later treated at Good Samaritan Hospital. A 14 year old bike rider Carl Ragel was injured at Lincoln and Mockingbird when hit by Mary Nelson. Ragel taken to a doctor by his parents. No citations issued and a new traffic signal at the intersection is not yet working.
George Miller DVM was installed as president of the Scottsdale Jaycees at a Saturday night banquet at the Valley He Hotel. New officers include Hunter Peyton internal VP Warren Searles external VP Bob Hendricks MOAA VP Ronald Weaver secretary and Donald Davis treasurer with Fréda Golden Robert Johnson Ted Morton Jim Pease Doyle Roscoe Hugh Sheean and Jim Snarr on the board. Several members were honored for service, with awards for top hands sparkplugs and presidential citations going to listed individuals.
London dispatch reports Charles de Gaulle’s resignation as president opens the door to a shift toward renewed allied cooperation led by the United States. The move risks internal instability with Communists and the army at the fringes as De Gaulle’s legacy and anti American stance cast long diplomatic shadows.
Peking Radio quoted Lin Piao saying Communist China is prepared for a full scale war with the United States and the Soviet Union and even a nuclear war. The broadcast, tied to the May air congress, described a hard line policy and readiness to export revolution abroad.
Scottsdale police seek a gang linked to three break ins on E McDowell Rd from April 5 to April 26. Targets include Nowak Used Cars at 7825 E McDowell Ray, Jack Ross car lot, and Lablews Texaco at 7401 E McDowell with items stolen such as radios clocks coffee pots cigarettes money and tools.
